BestTimeToHike

How the hiking score works

We combine temperature comfort (33%), precipitation (22%), snow (22%), heat stress (11%), wind (0%) and daylight (11%). Grid wind remains visible as context but is excluded from the score until it is validated for trail exposure and gusts.

We use official ERA5-Land hourly time series for the 1991-2025 historical period. Each destination currently represents one selected representative model-grid cell at its official model elevation.

Scores describe historical suitability at that selected cell. Grid-cell wind is coarse 10 m wind, not validated exposed-trail or gust information. They are not forecasts, whole-region trail conditions or safety advice.

What we do not recommend

34 destinations carry no recommendation

These places are in the catalogue and their climate record is complete. No month clears every critical component, so we publish no hiking score and no best months for them rather than a weak one.
